Card Basics FAQ

1. How can I get information about my account?

More information about your American Express account is available online or by calling the customer service number listed on the back of your Card or your account statement.

2. How much should I pay each month on my credit card?

A: To reduce interest costs, pay as much as you can, and at least the minimum due. Paying more than just the minimum due helps you reduce the overall amount of finance charges you pay over time.

3. What should I do if there is an error on my card statement?

You should notify the card issuer in writing as soon as possible after the first bill containing the error was mailed to you. Include your name; account number; the type, date and amount of the error; and the reason why you believe the bill contains an error. In return, the card issuer must investigate the problem and correct the error or explain to you why the bill is correct. You do not have to pay the amount in question during the investigation.

4. What should I do if I can’t make my credit card payment?

If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t make a monthly payment, notify your credit card issuer to inquire about modified payment plan options that may reduce your payments to a more manageable level. Be cautious about turning to a for-profit debt settlement agency counseling company to solve your debt problems. Avoid paying such a firm in advance until you find out what the company can really do. Before you sign a contract, check out the organization with the U.S. Better Business Bureau or with the Federal Trade Commission.

Understanding Credit FAQ

1. How can I get a copy of my credit report?

You should review your credit report at least every year. Visit the “Contacts and Resources” page of this site for information on major U.S. credit bureaus.

2. Who can I contact for additional help?

There are non-profit organizations across the United States that counsel consumers. Counselors try to arrange a repayment plan that is acceptable to you and your creditors.
