Senior Discounts Can Offer Welcome, and Sometimes Surprising, Savings

When you retire, you may be pleasantly surprised at the price breaks widely available for senior citizens – 10 percent off the price of one thing, half price for another, sometimes no charge at all or simply a nominal fee. You’ll also discover the positive impact senior discounts can have on your pocketbook. Depending on the program under which you are receiving a discounted price, you can qualify as early as age 50, but in most cases age 62 or 65 is more likely. Not all discount opportunities are loudly announced. It’s up to you to find out the discounts available, to ask for them, and to have proof of your age handy when you do.

Do Your Research

By visiting your state’s or community’s Web site, you will uncover basic information about programs for seniors sponsored by state, county and municipal governments. Additional details are available by phone – look in the government section of your phone book.

But not all of the discounts available are offered by official agencies. Private businesses are also eager to attract seniors with attractive prices that will help build loyalty among a group whose patronage they value – people like you.

Entertainment

Most movie theaters offer senior ticket prices, making an evening out affordable especially if you begin it with a good meal at the “early-bird” sitting at the local restaurant. Be sure to check with the theater by phone to see if the special prices apply to all showings.

Some museums offer senior memberships that include free admission to performances, seminars and educational programs.

Transportation

Busses and trains to local destinations can often be boarded at reduced prices when you show your ID. Check with your transit company for guidelines. Longer trips also offer attractive prices – Amtrak gives senior citizens discounts on many trips, and even better prices for veterans of military service.

Education

Anyone who thinks youth is wasted on the young hasn’t visited a local college lately. When they do, they’ll be surprised to see a number of seniors on the way to classes. Many institutions of higher learning (both state and private) reduce or even eliminate tuition charges for seniors. As a student, you may have to pay certain fees, buy books and purchase a parking sticker.

Travel and Financial Services

The American Express Senior Member Card, designed with you in mind, provides travel offers including last-minute bargains which are updated weekly. If you are a Senior Cardmember 62 years of age or older, your annual fee is just $35 instead of the usual $55. Additional Cardmembers on your account will also receive a reduced annual fee of $20. The senior members newsletter, Horizons (mailed to members but also available online) includes frequent articles on travel subjects.
