Easy, Convenient Ways to Pay Your Charge and Credit Card Bills

If you are still paying your charge or credit card bills by mail, you may want to consider the convenience of two 21st century alternatives – Pay by Phone (PBP) and Pay by Computer (PBC). Both are quick, easy and secure ways to attend to a bill that comes around once a month.

Both methods are password-protected and keep your card transactions and payments confidential. Once you have enrolled for these services with your card issuer, remitting your card payments every month becomes as easy as punching in numbers on an automated phone call or completing a pre-formatted computer screen with a few keyboard strokes.

Computer or Phone: Which is Best for You?

If you have easy access to your computer, you may find it more convenient to pay your account from your home PC.

However, if you are often away from home or do not have easy access to a computer when you want to pay a bill, you may prefer the flexibility of Pay by Phone.

How These Payment Options Work

Most charge or credit cards offer these bill payment services. To find out about your specific card issuer, call the customer service number and ask for details.

In most cases, enrolling involves similar procedures. First, you arrange with your banking institution to transmit your authorized withdrawals from your account to your credit card issuer(s) when you are ready to make payments. Checking accounts from a bank, a savings and loan, or a credit union are eligible. Verify that your particular account is eligible by checking with the financial institution.

Once you have selected the payment account you want to use, you will then provide specific account-related information to your credit card issuer to ensure that your monthly payments will come from the account you have selected. While the procedures may vary slightly, the set-up process generally requires providing information that would appear on a normal check – similar to what you might do to arrange for direct deposit.

Once the set-up is complete, your information will be held securely so that information such as your account balance remains between you and your bank while information such as your individual purchasing transactions remains between you and your credit or charge card issuer.

Making a Payment

Once you are enrolled, paying your bill is easy and involves a few easy steps. You begin by logging on with your computer (PBC) or dialing the card issuer’s toll-free number (PBP).

After confirming your banking and account information, you will receive your credit or charge account balance. You can pay your balance in full or, with revolving accounts, pay your minimum monthly charge. You then can securely transfer the funds you designate, from the account you select, in the amount you determine, to be applied to the bill you want to pay - all in a few minutes and with a few keystrokes or by pressing a few buttons on your telephone. It’s that simple.

If you are an American Express Cardmember, you can find out more about Pay by Computer here or about Pay by Phone by calling 1-800-472-9297.
