American Express, in partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), launched the American Express Nonprofit Leadership Academy. This nation-wide program develops the country’s finest emerging leaders who are dedicated and poised to be at the helm of the nonprofit sector.
The inaugural class of the American Express Nonprofit Leadership Academy participated in a week-long program at the American Express offices in June of 2008. The curriculum focused on building the personal, business and leadership skills needed to run a successful nonprofit organization. Class discussions were enhanced by bringing together government officials, CCL trainers, and American Express’ top executives. Featured speakers included New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Charles Rangel and American Express Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Kenneth I. Chenault.
After a competitive application process, twenty-four emerging nonprofit leaders from across the country were selected from twelve national and local nonprofit partners. The participants represented community, environmental, international relief and cultural organizations. Each of the participants hold manager-level positions, is dedicated to a career in the nonprofit sector and has built strong momentum in their respective fields. To ensure the Nonprofit Leadership Academy has a lasting impact and to measure its effectiveness, participants set goals and action plans during the training and have access to follow-up support from CCL in the form of online networking tools, telephone coaching sessions, leadership goal checkpoints and a one-year review to complete their training.
