AMERICAN EXPRESS HIRES VICE PRESIDENT, SECTOR LEADER - LIQUID ASSETS

MINNEAPOLIS, May 28, 2003 -- American Express Financial Advisors Inc. (AEFA), a unit of American Express Company, today announced the hiring of James C. Jackson, CFA, as vice president, sector leader – Liquid Assets.

Jackson will provide liquid asset sector-specific strategic guidance and portfolio management for the company's retail, institutional and owned-asset portfolios. As a sector leader, Jackson will report to Michelle M. Keeley, senior vice president, Fixed Income Investments, and will be a senior leader in the fixed income group. In addition to overseeing investments in Treasuries, agencies and swaps, Jackson will help coordinate fixed income strategy, sector allocation, duration and yield curve positioning across all fixed income portfolios.

Jackson comes to American Express with more than 15 years experience in fixed income investing. Most recently, he worked for UBS Global Asset Management in Chicago as co-head of US Investment Grade Fixed Income. Prior to joining UBS Global Asset Management, he worked as investment officer and portfolio manager in the fixed income division of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company.

“Jamie is a tremendous addition to our fixed income group,” said Keeley. “He has considerable experience as both a sector leader and a portfolio manager and brings outstanding investment and leadership expertise to American Express.
