AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY APPOINTS CORPORATE GOVERNANCE OFFICER

NEW YORK, November 17, 2003 -- American Express Company today announced the appointment of Stephen P. Norman to the newly created position of Corporate Governance Officer, effective immediately. Mr. Norman will also continue to serve in his current position as Corporate Secretary.

Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, American Express. “Steve has broad experience in this area, and he has worked closely with our board, with individual investors and with advocates. Establishing this new position under his leadership will help to ensure that American Express continues to meet high standards and remains in the forefront of good corporate governance.”

The Corporate Governance Officer responsibilities include providing key support to the board of directors regarding the development and implementation of appropriate governance practices and formulating and recommending sound governance principles.
