AMERICAN EXPRESS INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST SMART CARD APPLICATION AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET

Blue from American Express offers secure, convenient access to favorite Web Sites

NEW YORK, January 29, 2003 -- Blue from American Express®(TM), the credit card featuring multiple cardmember benefits including a smart chip, now offers the industry's first smart card application that can be downloaded from the Internet, American Express Company announced today.

The new application -- ID Keeper(SM) -- stores and "remembers" multiple web sites, online IDs and passwords; offers consumers easy, automated access and entry to favorite web sites; and provides a secure, convenient way to navigate and shop online.

"ID Keeper combines the security and flexibility of smart chip technology with the convenience and reach of the Internet," said David Bonalle, vice president and general manager of advanced payments development, American Express. "ID Keeper delivers on the promise of smart chip applications available via the Internet, while adding yet another consumer benefit to Blue from American Express."

The free ID Keeper application can be obtained by going to americanexpress.com/idkeeper, inserting Blue from American Express into a smart card reader, and downloading ID Keeper directly from the Internet. Cardmembers can then establish their personal profile of favorite web sites, IDs, passwords, and other information - which then helps users navigate and shop online at their favorite web sites without having to recall and enter multiple URLs, passwords, IDs, and other data. The Internet download capability was developed through the Datacard® Affina™ Life Cycle Management System, a product of the Datacard Group.

An innovator and leader in leveraging technology to deliver value for its customers and its business, American Express introduced Blue from American Express in 1999, in what was the first wide-scale rollout of smart cards in the United States. Since that time, the company has extended the global reach of its smart card with a number of international launches, including in Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Smart chip features on Blue from American Express, which vary according to market needs, have included enhanced online security, loyalty applications, and secure point-of-sale payments. In addition to the smart chip features, Blue from American Express offers no annual fee, a low fixed interest rate, and a fee free rewards program.
