AMERICAN EXPRESS GLOBAL NETWORK SERVICES
Global Network Services ("GNS") is the American Express business unit that manages the Companys relationships with card-issuing business partners around the world. GNS was formed in 1997 after American Express invited banks and other institutions to issue charge and credit cards on the American Express global merchant network. The goal of GNS is to build upon American Express key assets to become the global network of choice for third-party institutions interested in establishing a high-quality payment card business.
The global network business has today become a key growth initiative of American Express. To date, GNS has 79 partnerships with banks and other institutions in close to 90 countries, and is one of the fastest growing parts of American Express. Our Partners are generally among the leading financial institutions in each local market, and include such well-known names as HSBC (Argentina and Brazil), Deutsche Bank (Italy), Samsung (Korea) and Credit Saison (Japan).
By inviting other issuers to join the American Express merchant network, GNS is providing American Express with considerable incremental growth opportunities. It leverages American Express network investment over a broader base of customers, generating considerable economies of scale and new revenue streams for the Company. Ultimately, these partnerships help to increase the number of American Express-branded products, drive more spending onto our merchant network, and significantly expand the reach of the American Express brand.
