AMERICAN EXPRESS INTRODUCES CLEAR, A NEW CREDIT CARD WITH NO FEES OF ANY KIND AND GENEROUS REWARDS

Clear Card Has No Fees, Automatic Rewards Program, Free Enhanced Credit Report and More

NEW YORK, October 13, 2005 -- American Express announced today the introduction of Clear from American Express(SM), a new credit card that has no fees of any kind, a generous and automatic rewards program, and valuable financial management tools, including a free enhanced credit report, account alerts, and more. Clear is designed for people who lead busy lives and desire a straight forward credit card that provides valuable rewards and helps them more easily manage their finances.

“We are delighted to offer consumers another choice with Clear from American Express,” said Larry Sharnak, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Lending Products at American Express. “Many consumers have told us they want a credit card with no fees, automatic rewards, and the ability to pay over time – all backed by the world-class service they expect from American Express. Clear is designed with these customers in mind.”

Clear has no fees of any kind, including:

  • No Annual Fee
  • No Late Fees
  • No Over-limit Fees

Attaining Clear rewards is easy and automatic – cardmembers receive a shopping card worth $25 for every $2,500 of eligible spend – with no limits on how much they can earn. There is no enrollment or redemption process required, the card can be used virtually anywhere the American Express® Card is accepted, and it expires one year after issuance.

“Cardmembers will enjoy a nice surprise when they open their mailbox and find their shopping card has arrived,” Sharnak added. “They can buy what they wish with the card, and since the rewards are easily attainable, the shopping cards just keep coming.”

Clear also provides a number of benefits and services to help cardmembers better manage their finances. These include a free user-friendly credit report and credit score – something consumers typically pay extra for. Account Alerts, including payment due reminders and balance updates, make it easy for cardmembers to keep track of their account activity.

The card gives cardmembers the flexibility to pay over time. For more information about Clear and to apply for the card, consumers can go to americanexpress.com/clear.

In addition, Clear offers the breadth of American Express® Card benefits, including:

Retail services, such as Purchase Protection, which provides up to $1,000 coverage if an item is stolen, accidentally damaged or vandalized within 90 days of purchase.

Security services, such as Identity Theft Assistance, which provides dedicated support to help cardmembers safeguard their personal information, determine if their identity has been stolen, and if so, provide assistance in helping regain it.

Travel services, such as Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance(1).
