TIMOTHY J. MCCLIMON APPOINTED NEW HEAD OF AMERICAN EXPRESS PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAM
NEW YORK, February 17, 2006 -- American Express Company today announced the appointment of Timothy J. McClimon to the position of vice president, Corporate Affairs and head of the Company's philanthropic program.

"He has had a distinguished career on virtually all sides of the not-for-profit world and he enjoys a national reputation for expertise in strategic corporate philanthropy and corporate social responsibility."
Mr. McClimon will be responsible for the American Express philanthropic program, which incorporates employee volunteer activities and grants in three major program areas – Economic Independence, Cultural Heritage and Community Service. He will also be president of the American Express Foundation.
Mr. McClimon most recently served as executive director of Second Stage Theatre, a large, not-for-profit, New York City based organization dedicated to revisiting neglected contemporary American masterpieces and developing new plays.
Prior to joining Second Stage Theatre, he held a series of senior positions over a period of 16 years with AT&T's philanthropic program, including heading up the philanthropic group from 1996 to 2003. Before this, he practiced law with Webster and Sheffield, specializing in not-for-profit law, and served as an administrator at the National Endowment for the Arts.
Mr. McClimon has served on the boards of a number of national and local not-for-profit organizations, including the Council on Foundations, New Visions for Public Schools and the Times Square Alliance. He has written extensively on various aspects of corporate philanthropy and is an adjunct professor at New York University.
He holds a bachelors degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, a masters from St. Cloud University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
Mr. McClimon will join American Express is March. He succeeds Beth Salerno, who retired in August 2005.
