CLASSIC VIDEO GAME -- PONG® -- BOUNCES BACK FOR AMERICAN EXPRESS' 2006 US OPEN ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN
"Roddick v. PONG" Campaign and Interactive Online Game Launches
NEW YORK, August 18, 2006 -- American Express today announced former world champion and video game favorite – “PONG” – will make a comeback to play former US Open winner Andy Roddick in the Company's campaign to promote its 2006 US Open sponsorship.
The campaign, titled Roddick v. PONG, will launch on August 21 and features a television spot and website www.StopPong.com where players can help Roddick take on PONG's challenge in an updated version of the classic Atari computer game.
“We had a lot of fun creating this spot where Andy, renowned for his bullet serve, takes on PONG, arguably the world's strongest baseline player,” said Rich Lehrfeld, Vice President, Global Sponsorship, American Express. Andy is an incredible partner to American Express and we are thrilled to have him featured in our campaign to support our thirteenth year of US Open sponsorship.
“We expect thousands of people to get behind Andy by taking the online PONG challenge.”
In the television spot, Andy Roddick arrives on the tennis court to find that recognizable PONG ‘white bar' is his match opponent (the scoreboard reads: “RODDICK v. PONG”). Roddick proceeds to use his hard-hitting serves against the video game character, narrowly winning in the end with a trick serve. Roddick reflects: “My life is about taking on all challenges. That's why my card is American Express.”
