AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY NAMES NEW TREASURER

NEW YORK, June 30, 2006 -- American Express Company today announced that it has named David Yowan as senior vice president, corporate treasurer. This change will become effective July 17th, 2006. As treasurer, Mr. Yowan succeeds Paul H. Hough, who now assumes the role of senior vice president, Service Network Partners, Consumer, Small Business and Merchant Services.

Mr. Yowan joined American Express in 1999. Most recently, he was the senior vice president of Treasury Strategy, assistant treasurer of American Express Company, and treasurer of Travel Related Services. As corporate treasurer, Mr. Yowan will be responsible for management of capital resources at American Express, the management of short- and long-term funding, asset securitization, market risk and overall cash management.

Prior to joining American Express, Mr. Yowan was senior vice president, portfolio and risk management, for the global consumer banking business of Citigroup. Earlier in his career, he was senior financial analyst with the Ayco Corporation, then a subsidiary of American Express.

Mr. Yowan holds a Master of Management degree from the Kellogg School of Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the College of William and Mary.
